Ahhh…Friday!!

To finish off the ocean unit, we started our day by reading a book about pirates called ‘How I became a pirate’. It was a pretty funny book (especially when Mrs. Ehrich talks like a pirateJ).  We then brainstormed some of pirates’ favorite words, which are of course ‘AR’ words (you need to say it like a pirate to believe me). Some of the words we came up with are: car, star, far, argh, guard, hard, etc… We also had reading groups, calendar, and recess.

After lunch we had music with Mrs. Price. The kids did a great job! After quiet time we practiced using double digit numbers with dice and comparing them. We used the dice to determine if the numbers are larger or smaller. This is a skill we will be continuing to work on. We also watched a Magic School Bus movie about the ocean. The kids loved it! At the end of the day we had snack and free choice time.

Also, if you get the chance to bring in a snack for class, that would be great. Please note that we have 23 kids in our class. Thanks so much!

We had a great day in Kindergarten! Our field trip was awesome at the Sea Life Aquarium. The kids had a blast and were pretty exhausted on the way home, too! Ask your child about the different animals that they saw. Some highlights were: the sharks, swimming sea turtle, swordfish, tiny turtles, sting rays, touching the starfish, jellyfish, seeing eel swim in and out of holes, learning about an octopus, knowing the word ‘habitat’, and just exploring. We also had great behavior that everyone stayed in the green today. That sounds like a perfect day to me!!

Have a great evening!

The kids are getting really excited about the field trip tomorrow!! We had a great day in Kindergarten. In the morning we started our day by playing a fun shark game. We passed around a shark and if the shark landed in your hand you needed to sit out. The kids were all cheering for each other, it was a ton of fun! We also tallied our favorite ocean animals (tallies is a great skill to work on if you have the opportunity). We also had reading groups today and calendar. We had recess, lunch, music, and quiet time. We finished up the tally chart that we began earlier in the day and then we wrote about our data. For snack today we made sand to eat…edible sand that is! We crushed up some vanilla wafers and mixed it with vanilla pudding. After writing down the directions, we ate that sand right up! We ended the day by having free choice time and having a brief discussion about our field trip. Please keep in mind the following things:

*bring a bag lunch with your child’s name (all throw away items)

*there is no need to bring snow pants tomorrow as we will not be going out to recess

*Try (if possible) to have your child use the bathroom in the morning before coming to school

*A backpack is optional

Have a great evening!

We had a good day today! We started the day with cybrary with Mrs. Stevens. She said they were great listeners, so we got a star!! Yay!! We then had morning meeting and read a funny story called ‘Stella’ about a little boy with lots of questions about the ocean. We then drew a picture of an ocean animal in our journals and labeled its parts. We had calendar, recess, and lunch. We had stations in the afternoon which included:

*ocean shape drawing

*sight word searching on an octopus

Finding the beginning sound of ocean animals

*Making an ‘O’ page for a class book

*Intro to iPads…Yes, you read that correctly!!

We are one of the six classes that have been selected to pilot 5 iPads in our classroom (thanks to the help of Blue Heron’s wonderful PTO). I have been to a few trainings on iPads within the last few weeks and I am thrilled to be able to finally share them with our kids. Throughout this year, we will have the opportunity to do some great learning activities with our iPads. The kids will be using them in a small group setting or during free choice time (carefully of course) to focus on some great skills such as reading, writing, math, fine motor, or art. I have posted a picture of what the kids did today, just a pretty easy and basic coloring app (and letter identification). They really got the hang of it right away, I’m sure they’ll be teaching me soon on what to do!! I’m really looking forward to sharing more of our explorations!

The rest of the day consisted of snack (Happy ½ Birthday Nathan) and free choice time. We ended the day with a book donated from Nathan and his family. Thanks so much!! If you get the chance to send in a snack for 23 kids, that would be great. Have a great evening!!

We had a great day in Kindergarten today! In the morning we learned a little about whales and the difference between some of them. The kids worked on a whale watching book, too! We also had reading groups this morning. We had calendar and recess time (please remember to continue to send warm mittens, boots, and snow pants each day). In the afternoon we had a beach lunch (all tables removed and blankets sprawled everywhereJ) and quiet time. We then watched a short video where we learned about whales and sharks. The kids even answered little quizzes at the end of each section. I thought they did a great job! We also played some games in math today on the Smartboard and practiced our number pattern counting (by ones, fives, and tens). We had gym, snack and had free choice time. It was a great day!

Please note, we are now (finally) in need of some snacks for our classroom. The cupboard is bare!! If you get a chance to send in a snack for 23 kids sometime next week, that would be great. Have a great weekend!

January 18th

Today we learned a lot about the little critters that crawl at the bottom of the ocean...crabs! In the morning we read a story by Eric Carle called ‘A House for Hermit Crab’. We then brainstormed some things that we already knew about crabs. We used the Smart board to watch a few short video clips about crabs and then we brainstormed some MORE about the things that we learned. The kids really paid attention! We also did some funny crab walking while we spelled some words. They did great (check out the pictures)! We also had reading groups and calendar.

We went outside for recess, had lunch and quiet time. For math today the kids pretended to be fish, while I caught them. The kids had to determine how I caught each groups of fish (shirt color, glasses, pants color). They really caught on to the attribute that I used for each group. We also read the story Rainbow Fish. In this story the beautiful fish gives away his very special scales to his friends. It’s a great book about sharing and being a good friend. We then had gym, snack and free choice time to end the end. It was a good day!

We had a good day in room A107 today. In the morning, we were introduced to the new letter for this week, Ff. We came up with lots and lots of words that begin with the /f/ sound (however we did learn that ‘ph’ makes the /f/ sound too).  We practiced writing this letter. The kids earned a star during handwriting time because they were working so hardJ. We also were introduced to our new sight word, ‘play’. We had reading groups today and then had calendar.

In the afternoon we had recess, lunch, music, and quiet time. For math today we used attribute blocks and discussed the different ways that these shapes can be alike or different (size, color, shape). Ask your child what shape they used today. We also went to Boost-Up and had the chance to move our bodies a little bit. At the end the day we had snack and free choice time. Also, to launch our ocean unit, read a cute ocean story called, Ten Little Fish. We will be learning more about oceans this week and next week.

For our field trip next week, I have chosen four chaperones. Thanks again to everyone who offered! I sent home a sheet with those four families today. If you did not get a sheet about the field trip today that means you were not selected at this time and if you have already paid for yourself as a chaperone I will return that money to you. However, I know there are still some parents who would like to join us. If so, you can meet us down at the Mall of America and pay the admission there (there is a cheaper online ticket option). Please let me know if you are interested in doing this so I can plan the groups accordingly. Thanks again so much for your support! Please let me know if you have any questions.

We had a fun and busy day here in Kindergarten! We started out our day going to cybrary with Mrs. Stevens. We had morning meeting and then read some stories about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I was AMAZED at how much information these little smarties new about this important man! They knew what he stood for, some things that he changed, and knew that he isn’t alive anymore. Like I said…very impressive! We wrote a little page about how we can help change the world, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ayden helped us with calendar and then we go ready for recess.

After lunch we had quiet time and then went right into stations. Our penguin stations included:

·         Ordering penguin cards by 5’s up to 150

·         Making our very own penguin

·         Matching penguin words to pictures

·         Understanding how a penguin stays warm and dry in Antartica (ask your child about ‘oil’ and ‘blubber’) check out our pictures (each child had the opportunity to try the blubber glove)

We then had snack and a brief free choice time. At the end of the day we went up to Mrs. Gerst’s class and made some cute snowmen with them. It was a great day!

If you haven’t had a chance to send in your permission form for the Sea Life field trip, please send that in on Tuesday. Also, today is the last day to order any books. If you would like to send in a paper copy, I can take that on Tuesday as well. Have a great, long weekend!!
